Residual gases.-In gas-filled lamps having tungsten filaments an oxyhalide of carbon is introduced in addition to the inert gas. The oxyhalide of carbon may be formed inside the bulb, e.g. by introducing carbon monoxide and chlorine which react under the influence of light to form carbonyl chloride. An excess of carbon monoxide may be provided. Another method consists in placing graphite on the filament and silver chloride in the bulb, the presence of water vapour in the bulb causing carbonyl chloride to be formed.
