Abstract
270,116. Douglas Motors, Ltd., and Pullin, C. G. June 28, 1926. Cam-actuated pumps; stroke, varying; reciprocating and rotating piston.-A pump mainly for lubricating internal-combustion engines comprises a plunger 6 reciprocated by a projecting finger on the plunger stem following a cam groove in a ring 12 as the plunger is rotated by wheel or worm gear 4 working on teeth 7 on the plunger, the teeth being elongated to permit reciprocation of the plunger. The stroke is adjusted by tilting the ring 11 in its trunnions to vary the angle of the cam groove to the plunger axis by turning the rod 13. The adjustment may be made bv Bowden wire from the throttle control. The plunger has an axial hole 18 leading to a radial hole 19 which communicates alternately in its movement with the inlet 16 and delivery 17. The end of the cylinder 5 is closed by a plug 15. In a modification the pump may have a plunger at each end of a reciprocated part rotated by a worm drive, and with similar stroke operation. The ports in the casing may communicate direct with passages drilled in the timing gear cover plate or other part of the engine to dispense with external pipes.
