Abstract
1379715 Reciprocating pumps GENERAL MOTORS CORP 21 June 1973 [26 June 1972] 29511/73 Heading F1A [Also in Division F2] An oil metering pump for supplying lubricating oil to the seals on a rotor of a rotary engine includes a stepped bore, a co-operating stepped plunger 78 which is rotated within the bore at a speed in accordance with engine speed and a variable cam arrangement 134 which reciprocates the plunger 78 and is angularly adjusted in accordance with the throttle opening of the engine to alter the length of the plunger stroke. A variable volume pumping chamber 84 is defined between the steps of the plunger and bore and has diametrically opposed inlet ports 92, 94 and outlet ports 97, 98 which are 90 degrees angularly displaced from the inlet ports. 0:1 is fed to the inlet ports 92, 94 via passages 97, 85, 89, 90 and is delivered from the outlet ports to oil pipes 110 and 108 (not shown) and thence to a respective carburetter whereat it is mixed with fuel and then delivered to the rotor chamber of the engine associated with that carburetter. The larger diameter land 82 of the plunger 78 has a flat 96 which allows periodic, sequential communication between the chamber 84 and the inlet and outlet ports. The plunger 78 is rotated by the engine's output shaft via an input shaft 118 having a worm 124 which meshes with a pinion 126 on the plunger 78. The plunger 78 is reciprocated by a spring 128 which urges a V-shaped cam follower 132 having a diametric ridge 157 against a cam 134 of a cam-shaft 136, the cam-shaft 136 being rotated about its longitudinal area 3 by a lever 142 and rod 148 connected to a throttle shaft (not shown). The cam 134 has a cylindrical land 160 having a concave recess 162 of variable depth which co-operates with the cam follower 132 to alter the stroke length of the plunger 78 as the camshaft 136 is rotated by the rod 148, to produce two plunger delivery strokes per revolution of the plunger 78 and to increase plunger stroke with an increase in throttle opening.
