Abstract
269,234. Nielsen, H., and Laing, B. Jan. 6, 1926. Coking processes; producers.-In a continuous process of making water gas, the temperature of the reaction is maintained by the addition to the steam of an inert gas, or an inert gas mixed with carbon - dioxide, heated to a temperature above that at which the reaction takes place, a suitable temperature bein? 1000‹ to 1200‹ C. The steam may also be superheated and the sensible heat of the resultant hot gases may be utilized by passing them through a retort to distil carbonaceous materials therein. The mixed retort gases and water gas may, after removal of the condensates, be used as the inert gas of the process. The mixed retort and water gas may be re-circulated through the retort. One of two chambers 6 containing chequer brickwork used alternately is heated by combustion gases entering it at inlet 8 and leaving by outlet 9. Steam and the inert gas is then admitted by pipe 11, is heated in the chamber 6 and enters chamber 1 by passage 10. Semi-coke is charged into chamber 1 and rests in superimposed shelves 2 when the reaction takes place in the space between the shelves, the residue falling into an ash pit 1<a>. The superheated steam passes by channels 5 through the charge and the gases and vapours cooled pass to an outlet 12. The steam may instead be admitted through an inlet adjacent to the passage 10.
