Abstract
267,560. Krebs, E. March 15, 1926, [Convention date]. Cells; electrodes; diaphragms. - A removable unit for use in the electrolysis of alkali metal chloride solutions comprises a permeable cathode a, a diaphragm g and a hood d carrying an anode c; the unit is supported in troughs e at the top of the cell forming a liquid seal. In the apparatus shown, the cathode is provided with a flange secured between angle-irons h, j by screws k. The diaphragm is secured together with a packing strip o and a frame m of insulating material between the hood d and the angle-iron j. The frame m may be of cement or a composition of pitch, finely-ground quartz, and quartz sand known as " Prodorit." The space p between the hood and the angle-iron is filled with fusible material such as wax or ceresine. In a modification, the angle-irons h. j are replaced by a T- iron to the upper side of the flange of which the cathode is secured by screws or by welding. A number of troughs may be arranged across the top of a single cell so as to accommodate several units, troughs also being provided along the ends. Each cathode may be of sinuous form so as to enclose two anodes.
