Abstract
267,016. Fairweather, W., (Singer Manufacturing Co.). Sept. 15, 1926. Buttonhole and eyelethole sewing- machines.-Work-clamps. The lower clamp-plate is provided with an auxiliary clamping member which fills the slot left in the plate to allow the movement of the needle-throat out of the way of the cutting jaws. The device is described as applied to an eyelet-hole sewing-machine having upper clamping jaws 9 and cutting jaws 17, 18 of known type. The lower clamping plate 8 is formed with a slot 39 to allow the movement of the needle-throat 33 on its pivoted supporting arm 36 under the pressure of the advancing cutting jaw 17. The slot 39 is filled, in proximity to the throat-plate, by a plate 40 supported by a spring-pressed lever 41 so that it may be pressed back by the movement of the needle-throat and return to provide a lower work-clamping surface during the stitching. In a modification, Fig. 9, the slot in the plate 8 is enlarged and is occupied by a pair of spring- stressed levers 46 bevelled at 50 to allow the needle-throat to force them apart.
