Book-keeping; hand-rests.-In order to enable journal sheets and account sheets of the same size and ruling to be employed, a device for facilitating book-keeping, of the kind having a writing-plate against which the journal sheet and the account sheet are clamped by separate clamping-bars, is used, the journal-sheet clamping-bar being provided with projecting members over which the account sheet can be clamped with its edge registering with the edge of the journal sheet. In addition, bolts, the faces of which are in the same plane as the edge of the journal-sheet clamping-bar, may be provided in the writing-plate to act as stops for the journal sheet. As shown in Fig. 2, the bar 3, which may be stamped from sheet metal, is hinged to the writing-plate 1 and is adapted to be held in clamping-position by a pin 6. Flat springy members 4, attached to or integral with the bar 3 project from the inner face of the bar for the purpose of clamping the journal and carbon sheets on the writing-plate, square bolts 21 determining the position of the edge of the sheets. Hinged to the bar 3 is a spring clip 10, 10<1> for clamping the account sheet, the edge of which abuts against the bar 3, which itself registers with the faces of the bolts 21. The bar 10<1> of the spring clip is graduated to serve as a, guide for positioning the account sheet, which is so adjusted that the line to be written upon is directly over the first blank line of the iournal sheet. A handrest and line-indicator 19 is pivoted to a slide movable over a guide 12 secured to the plate 1, the indicator being held in adjusted position bv a spring-pressed ball engaging recesses 13 in the guide 12; alternatively a spring-pressed lever mounted on the rest 19 may be adapted to engage notches in the edge of the plate 1. A pointer may be mounted in a groove or slot in the bar 10, and, in one form, is connected to an endless band operated by a ratchet each time the bar is lifted. In the modification shown in Figs. 15 and 16, bolts 41 are fixed to the plate 1 and are provided with slots adapted to be engaged by a slide 42 mounted in guides on the journal-sheet clamping-bar 44 to hold the latter in clamping- position. The bar 44 is provided with the clamping-members 4 for the journal sheet, and is pivoted to the plate 1 by pins 46. A bearing- block 48 on the bar 44 is pivoted to the plate 1 on a pin 60 in line with the pins 46, and carries the clamping-bar 50 for the account sheet on a pin 49. The bar 50 can be raised by pressure on the handle 10, or by means of a wedge-surface 52 on the slide 42 when the bar 44 is released.
