Abstract

264,412. Armstrong, J. J. V., (Union Special Machine Co.). Aug. 28, 1926. Sack-sewing machines.-In a machine for closing filled bags, a carriage carrying a sewing head is moved positively along a track in one direction by an actuating device which is connected to or disconnected from the carriage by manually controlled means, means being provided to return the carriage to its initial position after such disconnection. The machine comprises a sewing head 88 supported by a carriage 38 adapted to ,run on a channel iron track 37 carried by brackets 35 at the top of movable vertical members 26. The members 26 slide in guides secured to vertical standards 24 and are moved to adjust the height of the sewing head 88 by nuts 29 secured to them and threaded by vertical pillars 30 secured to the standards 24 and connected at their lower ends by bevel gearing to a horizontal shaft 33 provided with a crank handle 34. The standards 24 are secured to a base platform 23 supported by side members 20, to one of which is pivoted a rock shaft 94 carrying a pedal 96 and an arm 97 adapted to turn a vertical rod 99. The rod 99 telescopes into a tube 101 and is secured to it by a pin-and-slot connection which compels the tuba to turn with the rod. At its upper end the tube 101 is journaled in the bracket 35 and through levers 106, 107 turns a rock shaft 82 journaled in brackets 83 on the bracket 35. To the shaft 82 is secured a swinging rod 81 adapted to engage between rollers 80, Fig. 7, on a lever 58 pivoted at 59 to the carriage 38. This lever,. through a screw 57, cross-lever 54, and arm 51 operates a clutch member 45 on a vertical shaft 47, Fig. 8, journaled in a table 49 supported by the carriage 38, the other clutch member 44 being mounted on a shaft carrying a pinion 42 which meshes with a rack 41 secured in the channel iron track 37 so that rotation of the pinion moves the carriage along the track 37. The shaft 47 is driven by worm gearing from a shaft 61, to the end of which is secured a friction wheel 73. A motor 68 which actuates both the carriage and the sewing head is provided with a friction wheel 69 adapted to drive the friction wheel 73 when an idler wheel 70 is drawn downwards. To effect this the idler wheel is mounted on an arm 71 slidably pivoted on a pin 72 and formed with an arm 74 secured by a spring 75 to the lever 58. In operation, depression of the lever 58 by the pedal 96 puts in the clutch 45 on the shaft 47 and operatively connects the motor, through the wheels 69, 70, 73 to that shaft. When the pedal is raised, a stud 78 on the lever 58 engages the lower end of the arm 71 and lifts it, thus positively releasing the idler wheel 70, and the carriage 28 returns to its starting position by gravity, the track 37 being inclined for this purpose. A table 111. Fig. 3, may be affixed to the standards 24 to accommodate small bags, and if only one of these is to be sewn at a time, a stud on the carriage 38 is raised to lift permanently the lever 54 and thus disconnect the carriage from its driving mechanism.
