Cooling.- In a pulverulent-fuel furnace provided with an ashcooling screen consisting of one or more rows of water-tubes a, the lower row of tubes is provided with rotatable dampers b threaded on the tubes and adjustable from outside the furnace. The dampers are closed when it is desired to remove ashes from the pit A. The dampers facilitate the cooling action of the tubes and are protected by the tubes above when two or more rows of tubes are employed.
