Cam-actuated pumps; regulating delivery by return circuits and by closing suction valves; valve-gear.-In a fuel pump part of the fuel delivered through the valve 11 is returned to the suction side through a passage 21, a reduced portion 18 of the plunger 5, and a passage 19 opening into the inlet port 17. An inclined edge 20 on the plunger controls the time at which the passage 21 opens into the space 18, and this time may be varied by rotating the plunger by means of a lever 23 and sleeve 24 engaging a pin 26 on the plunger. An inclined edge 22 on the plunger controls the time at which delivery begins by closing the port 17, and this time also is varied by rotating the plunger. The plunger engages the stem of the valve 11 at the end of the stroke to ensure complete delivery. The actuating cam 4 is shaped to prolong the motion stroke for a short time after the edge 22 has opened the port 17. One or both of the controlling edges 20, 22 may be arranged on the cylinder 9 or on an intermediate bushing.
