Jib-cranes.-In level-luffing cranes in which the head-sheave g is carried by a jib lever c, the stay rope or ropes h for controlling the jib lever is passed over a pulley k on the tail of the lever and its tension is transmitted to the jib a at two points j, x. A certain minimum load balances the weight of the jib, while heavier loads merely increase the tension in the system and the friction on the bearings without affecting the equilibrium and the load cannot rise or fall except when raised or lowered by the hoist rope a<1>. The luffing gear comprises a driving shait u geared to a pair of sectors s connected with the jib by pairs of links w<1>, w, pivoted together at z. During the later part of the inward hitting movement, forks y on the sectors engage a pin at the pivot z and pull directly upon the links w. A pair of spiral plates or sheaves m, p, is adjustably secured to each sector s and each rope h passes over a sheave h on the jib lever, under one of the spiral plates or sheaves m, round a sheave n on the framework and is wound on one of the plates or sheaves p, or is connected to the jib at x. The sheave n is adjustable towards or away from the sheaves m, p. The stay rope h may pass over a semicircular guide pivoted on the jib head, both ends of the stay rope being connected with the compensating gear, or two separate ropes securedto the jib head may be employed.
