Machines and apparatus; hydraulic transmission of power. -Relates to steering-geear for ships of the kind described in Specification 21932/09, [Class 114, Ships &c., Propelling &c.], and 207,934 in which a duplex pumping system is provided and consists in the employment of a governor to operate the relay valve which secures the automatic isolation of the pump system out of action on the starting up of the second. Two pairs of oppositely-disposed rams 4-7 acting on the tiller 8 of the rudder post 9 and connected up by pipes 10, 13 and 18, 15 to junction boxes 12, 17 are operated by the pump 2 or alternatively by the pump 3, pipe 21 and pipes 26 and 125 communicating with one side of the pumps, and pipe 20 and pipes 27, 28 with the other side. Insulating valves 22, 24 and 23, 25 are interposed in the pipe systems and relay valves are operated so that starting up of the pump 2 effects the closure of the valves 22, 24 and the consequential isolation of the pump 3. The relay valve is operated by a governor 54 on the pump shaft pulling over a lever 56 against the action of a spring 58 and so raising a valve 45 from its seat, thus opening up to pressure a pipe 36 communicating by way of the junction box 35 and the pipes 34, 38 and so depressing a plunger 29, Fig. 2, arranged above the isolating valve 124, which is thus thrust on its seat. On starting up the pump 3 the other set of valves are operated! to isolate the pump 2.
