261,956. Fitzpatrick, H. D., (Marquette Tool & Manufacturing Co..) Feb. 9, 1926. Cupping. - A press for drawing sheet metal &c. has a crank-operated ram 12 and a blank-holder 15 which is independently actuated by fluid pressure. The blank-holder is secured to a member 14 carried by one or more rods 29 which pass loosely through the ram and are connected to cvlinders 17. A stationary piston 22 mounted on a rod 19 secured to a stationary member 10 is provided for each cylinder 17, the rods 19 also carrying stationary cylinders 18 in which the cylinders 17 may reciprocate. The cylinders 17, 18 are in permanent communication through a port 23 in the piston-rod. Fluid under pressure is delivered to the cylinders at the commencement of the working stroke of the press through a valve 33 which may be automatically controlled. After the drawing operation, the valve is rotated to place the cylinders in communication with the atmosphere through a pipe 35. A vent 27 is provided for the space between the upper end of the cylinder 17 and the piston 22. In a modification, cylinders 44. Fig. 3, are secured to the ram 12 and reciprocate upon a stationary rod 51, the rods 19 carrying the blank-holder being coupled to pistons 62 within the cylinders 44. Provision is made for actuating the valves 33 independently or for so setting them that the flow of fluid to and from the cylinders may be controlled by a single valve.
