Bookbinding. - In bookbinding by means of cords secured within kerfs extending across the back of the signatures comprising the book, the kerfs are formed obliquely across the. entire back of the book and the ends of the cords are secured by adhesive to the sides thereof near to the back. The aligned backs of the superposed signatures 10, Fig. 2, are covered with adhesive, which is allowed to dry, and a series of equally spaced kerfs 12 are made obliquely across the adhered backs. A cord or thread 13 is then inserted into each kerf, the ends 15 of the cords extending about half an inch beyond the sides of the book. Adhesive is applied to the adjacent marginal edges of the sides of the book and into the kerfs, after which the ends of the cords are drawn downwardly upon the sides, where they adhere. The kerfs extend inwardly at an angle of about 45‹ to the plane of the back of the book. The book is provided with end sections, comprising an inner single sheet 17, Fig. 6, and an outer doubled sheet 18 connected together by a strip of cloth 19, which is folded around and secured to the folding edge of the sheet 18 and then secured to the rear edge 21 of the outer face of the sheet 17. The cloth strip 19 is next folded upon itself and the completed sections applied to the adhesive-coated marginal edges of the bound leaves 10, after which a cover 11 is applied.
