UNITED STATES 15,526,533 PATENT OFFICE.
ADOLPHE PROSPER DEGGIS, OF FRIBOURG, SWITZERLAND, ASSIGNO'R F ONE-HALF T0 WALDO ARTHUR IMAAS.
DEVICE FOR RAPIDLY BINDING FOLDED SHEETS, PAR-TS, AND THE LIKE.
Application filed December 6, 1923.
To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, AnoLrI-na Pnosrnn DEGeIs, of F ribourg, Switzerland, a citizen of the Confederation of Switzerland, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in or Relating to Devices for Rapidly Binding Folded Sheets, Parts, and the like, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to means for rapidly binding together folded sheets, such as, for instance, periodicals, book parts,
7 music, and the like, and has for its object an improved method of rapidly binding such parts and the like.
According to this invention I provide a binding device comprising a book casing or cover, inside which is secured on one side of the back at least one tape of strong 7 fabric, and on the other side of the back,
strip of rigid material constituting one leaf of a hinge, perforated opposite each tape in order to permit the said tape to be passed through the said strip, and carrying on its edge, in the vicinity of each of said perforations, a movable resilient clamp with a positive action adapted to pinch both the tape and the said strip, :thereby securing the former in position.
Each of said tapes is adapted to be passed into the free space provided by a wire fastener or stitch of suitable shape secured to the back of the sheets or book parts to be bound, and adapted to receive said tape. The said wire fastener or stitch is of such shape as to have at least one flat arched portion projecting outwardly from the portion of the stitch which is external to the sheets or book parts, so as to provide for the said freespace. The folded sheets or parts of book, periodicals, music, or the like, may be already stitched with said fasteners by the publisher, in which case the said parts or the like may be secured at once in the cover. As an alternative, the material to be placed in the binder may iave a strip of strong fabric, as shown at g, preferably gummed on one side and having fasteners attached to the other side, secured to the edges thereof to be bound. lVhen the desired number of periodicals or whatever is to be bound are provided with the strips g they may be placed between the back cover and retained in the manner above described to form a complete. book.
Serial No. 678,884.
Referring to the drawings:-
igure 1 is a detail view of my metallic binding fastener. L
Figure 2 is a view showing in dotted lines my fastener applied to sheets to be bound sheets being in open position.
Figure 3 is a view of the fastener applied to sheets, said sheets being partially closed.
Figure 4 illustrates a plurality of sheets supplied with my improved fasteners and having a tape passed therethrough.
Fig. 5 shows the cover provided 'with the tapes and hinged strip;
Figure (5 illustrates a plurality of sheets supplied with my improved fasteners secured to a special binding strip.
The fastener or stitch at the back or a book part or book of folded sheets is shaped as shown in Figs. 1, 2 and 3, the external portion a of the stitch forming a free space at the back t of the book, as shown in Fig. 8 The two branches of the fastener. bent back against the external portion 1', inaintain without play the sheets of the book in the usual manner (Figs. 4 and 6). i is the book. casing or cover within which are disposed along the back, on one side, one or more tapes 0 (Fig. 5), corresponding in width to the space formed by the lat arched portions of the fastener, and on the other side, the strip of rigid material C, constituting a hinge and provided with perforations j" opposite to and in alignment with each tape through which each said tape may pass. in the operative position the free portion of the tape is tin-ended lhru said perforations folded back upon the edge of the strip C and is maintained by means of the movable clamp (Z, which is lowered upon it so as to pinch the tape upon the strip.
lVhen one wishes to bind the parts of a periodical, for instance, provided with fasteners or stitches with flat arched portions as described above, it suffices to pass the tape into the free space forn'ied between the portion a of the fastener and the back 7). slip it through the perforated strip C, and finally secure it by means of the clamp (7. The following parts will then be inserted in exactly the same fashion until the volume is completed. It can then be placed as it is on a book-shelf.
lVith the arrangement above. lcscribed, the tape lies with its whole width against the back of the hook-parts to be wound,
teners Will not some apart, thereby tearing the backs of the book-parts, when the Weight of same is allowed to bear on the tape. Also, with the clamping arrangement described, the book may beheld iirany po-' sition Without fear of the leaves co ning loose.
What I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. In a binding device, a book cover, a longitudinal strip of rigid material hinged inside the saidicover alongone side of tie back thereof, at (least one tape of fabric secured inside the said cover on the other side of the back thereof, at least one movable resilient positive-action clamping device, one for each tape, mounted on the edge of the said stripano fasteners adapted to be secured to the back of folded sheets, book-partsiand the like to be bound, each fastener being forinedwitha central part-a having; offset parts, adapted to bearagainst the back of the folded sheets, and pin portions adapted to pierce the back of said folded sheets and be bent toward each other so as to grip the sheet inwardly of the piercings, each said tape being passed through the free space of saidfastener so as to bear for its Whole widtlragainst the back of said folded sheetand through a corresponding perforation in said strip and being ClZLlDPGClOIl the edge of said str pby said movable clamp.
2. In a binding device, a book cover, a longitudinal strip of rigid, inaterialhinged inside the said cover along one side of the back thereof, at least one tape of strong fabricsecured inside the said cover on the other side of the-back thereof, at least one movable resilient positive-action clamping device, one for eaohtape, .mounted on.
the edge of the said strip, in conibination With strips of strong fabric folded longitudinally, adapted to be stuck on the back of said folded sheets, and fasteners secured to the back thereof,- said fasteners being formed With a central part a having" offset parts, adapted to. bear against the-back. of the foldedfsheets, and ipini rportions, adapted to pierce the1back 0tv said folded sheets so asflto grip 8211116 inwardly of the piercings each said tape being passed through the free space of said fastenerso as .to bear for its Whole. Widthagainst the back of said folded sheet, and through a corresponding perforation 'in said strip and being clampedon the edge of saidstrip by said movable clamp.
.In testimony. whereof-I affix my si nature.
