Abstract

260,676. Kelty, H. A. Aug. 5, 1925. Spray carburettors ; vaporizers, external.-A charge consisting of the vapours of alcohol and water with or without air is admitted to the induction pipe to supplement that from the usual carburettor, or alcohol alone may be supplied to act as a carbon remover. A gasoline tank 2 is connected by a pipe 2<a> with the carburettor 8 which supplies the usual mixture to the cylinder of the engine 3 through a manifold 7. The device for producing the supplemental charge consists of a casing 9 secured either to the dashboard, or to a bracket 58 on the engine by means of a strap 56, and enclosing a heated container 14, Fig. 3, for the alcohol and water. The space 13 between the casing and container is connected with the exhaust pipe 6, Fig. 1, through a pipe 10 provided with a valve 20, Fig. 3, adapted to be actuated by a thermostat 25. Excess pressure in the space 13 is prevented by a hinged relief valve 19<a> loaded by a spring 22. The container 14 is secured by a flange to a cover 15 of the casing 9 and into the cover are inserted three pipes 27, 31 and 41. The pipe 27 leads to the manifold 7 between the carburettor 8 and the cylinders, the pipe 31 is of U-shape, has a valve 37 and extends downwardly outside the casing, Fig. 1, its lower end being open to the air, and pipe 41 leads from a tank 40 containing a mixture of alcohol and water. The inlet of the mixture to the container 14 is controlled by a valve 47 actuated by a float 52. A baffle 54 is interposed between the pipes 31 and 41 and serves as a stop for the float. The container 14 is intially filled to the desired level with a liquid consisting of equal proportions of alcohol and water, but as the alcohol evaporates at a faster rate than the water, the mixture in the tank 40 has a preponderance of alcohol, say 60 to 80 per cent. The initial mixture for the container 14 is drawn in through the pipe 31 which may also be employed to admit alcohol alone over the liquid already in the container or alternatively the container may be filled with alcohol. The strength of the mixture drawn through the pipe 27 may be varied by opening or closing the valve 37.
