Abstract

259,609. Katz, P. C., (Administrator of Davol, G. K.). Oct. 10, 1925, [Convention date]. Railway locomotives, internal - combustion engine; frames. - Comprises a locomotive propelled by an internalcombustion engine, in which the engine cylinders are parallel to the crank-shaft, and this shaft is disposed longitudinally of the locomotive. The engine may drive the wheels through electric or hydraulic transmission. The locomotive frame comprises side plates or members 17, braced together by the engine base-plate 18 and other cross members 19, 20, 21 forming parts of the engine structure. The two-stroke engine shown comprises two blocks, each of four cylinders 1 grouped around and parallel to the crank shaft 3. Each cylinder has two opposed pistons 2 connected bv rods 8 to wabblers 5 which are mounted freely on inclined crank-pins 4 but are prevented from rotating bodily by blocks 6 sliding in fixed guides 7. As shown in Fig. 3 the left-hand or outer pistons govern the exhaust ports 9 and the right-hand or inner pistons govern the scavenging and charging ports 10. In an engine with four cranks as shown, the outer cranks may be given a lead over the inner cranks to obtain earlier opening of the exhaust ports than of the inlet ports. The exhaust passes through the ports 10 to vertical pipes 11. The centrifugal blowers 12 supplying scavenging air to the engine are driven from the main shaft 3 through gearing 15, 16 and a shaft 13, and the cam shafts 28 for the operation of the fuel and starting valves are also driven by gearing 15 from. the shaft 3. In the construction shown two electric generators 25 are driven by the engine and supply power to motors 30 driving the wheel axles. An exciter 26 is provided at one end of the locomotive. Specification 245,472, [Class 7 (ii), Internal-combustion engines, arrangement &c. of], is referred to.
