Abstract

Alkali hypochlorite.-Solid mixtures of alkali hypochlorite and alkali chloride are prepared by suspending dry alkali hydroxide in a liquid, which, in the cold, has no chemical action on the alkali compounds present or formed or on chlorine and which does not dissolve alkali hypochlorite, and treating this suspension with chlorine. Carbon tetrachloride is stated to be a suitable liquid. Chlorine gas may be passed through the suspension or a solution of chlorine in carbon tetrachloride may be added to the suspension. The product may be separated from the liquid and water formed in the reaction by filtration and drying.
