Rotary furnaces; stuffing-box substitutes.- A device for sealing the annular space between fixed and moving cylindrical parts of rotary furnaces comprises a ring of juxtaposed members or elements, which are arranged to exert a yielding pressure in one direction against one of the cylin. ders. In one construction, Figs. 3 and 7, arcuate plates 12 are fitted in an annular groove 13 and are pressed inwards by springs 16 acting through radial rods 19 and blocks 15. A screw adjustment 18 is provided for tensioning the springs, and a packing 18<1> of asbestos rope may be interposed between the plates 12 and the rotary portion of the turnace. The part 14 carrying the sealing-device may be water-cooled. In a modification, Fig. 8, the groove and the arcuate plates b are formed with radial guides 21, 22, and the springs 16 are seated in the bottom of the groove. In a further modification, Figs. 5 and 9 plates c arranged edge to edge are carried by the part 14, and are pressed against the rotary cylinder by an elastic cable 24, which surrounds the furnace and is held by the bent-over ends of the plates. The joints between adjacent plates c may be covered by overlapping plates d. In a further form, Fig. 6, a sealing- screen is formed by projecting liquid from a ring of nozzles 25 against a baffle 27.
