Abstract
258,502. Hopkins Corporation, (Assignees of Hopkins, M. C.). Jan. 5, 1926, [Convention date]. Loud - Speakers ; dia - phragms. - Relates to telephonic loud speakers of the kind described in Specification 263,481, comprising a central relatively light and stiff diaphragm 1, which is preferably made of paper and is conical, and a surrounding sound-board 2 having a greater mass than that of the diaphragm 1, the coupling 'between the two parts being such that the central portion 1 reproduces the vibrations of higher frequencies, while vibrations of lower frequencies are transmitted to and reproduced by the outer portion 2. According to the invention, the sound-board 2 is made of balsa wood, and may be of three-ply construction. The outside diameter of the sound-board is large, a diameter of four feet, using a conical diaphragm of seventeen inches, being suitable. The instrument shown is preferably suspended by cords or chains. A small loud-speaker designed for use on a table, is also described and shown, this instrument being provided with feet, and the sound - board having an opening to serve as a hand grip.
