Abstract

257,395. Royce, F. H. July 28, 1925. Channels in internal-combustion engine parts. -Oil supplied under pressure to a pipe f passes through channels f<2>, f<10> in the cylinder head a of an internal-combustion engine to the interior of one a pair of valve rocker axles d, whence it passes to the interior of the other axle through passages c<7>. The axles d are closed at their ends by plugs d<2>, and oil is fed from the interior thereof to the bearings of the rocker e through bolts d<4>. Oil also passes from the pipe f to the bearing b<8> for the closed end of the hollow cam shaft b, oil entering the shaft from the bearing intermittently through a hole b<1>. The other end of the cam shaft is open, so that the lubricant therein is only under atmospheric pressure. Oil passes from the interior of the shaft b to its hearings through radial holes b<1>, and issues from the open end to lubricate the gearing b<3>, b<6>. Oil issuing from the bearings of the shaft b lubricates the cams and rocker rollers adjacent to the bearings, whilst the rollers and cams of intermediate rockers e<1>, which each operate two valves, are lubricated from the interior of the axle d through passages g<1> - - g<4>. Each axle d is made in two sections, one tapered end of each section being held in a corresponding hole in a member c bolted to brackets a' on the cylindrical head, the other end of each section being held in a member d<1> bolted to a similar bracket. The passages c<7> are formed in the member c.
