Abstract
A method of producing bespoke cavity barriers 10 for inhibiting the spread of smoke and fire in a building comprises the steps of producing an elongate rectangular block of high density interwoven mineral wool and coating the block on at least one surface with a material which intumesces in the presence of fire. A plurality of cavity barriers of the same or different dimensions are then cut from the coated block. The density of the mineral wool may be 240 kg/m3 and the thickness of the block may be 20mm and the depth 60mm. Fixings 14 enable the block to be attached to the walls or other features of a building. Also claimed is an elongate block formed with intumescent material on at least two opposed sides.
Description
CAVITY BARRIERS FOR INHIBITING THE SPREAD OF FIRE AND SMOKE IN BUILDINGS
Field of the Invention
This invention relates to bespoke cavity barriers for inhibiting the spread of smoke and fire in a building.
Background to the Invention
Cavity barriers are used extensively in the building trade to inhibit the spread of fire and smoke between adjoining walls and surfaces of buildings. In the past these have been produced as individual items for individual locations and many do not provide adequate protection against the spread of fire and smoke.
The present invention sets out firstly to produce a length of fully fire proofed material from which individual bespoke cavity barriers can be produced and which are fire rated for periods in excess of one hour: and secondly a method of producing said bespoke cavity barriers.
By bespoke is meant custom sized for any particular location within a building structure.
Previously, blocks formed from Rockwall (RTM) have been used as cavity barriers in buildings. However, because of the relatively low density of such blocks and the generally parallel alignment of its fibrous content such blocks rapidly shrink in the presence of fire thereby providing only limited protection against the spread of fire within a building. Typically, a rockwall block or barrier will burn off in around three minutes.
Summary of the Invention
In a first aspect, the invention provides a method of producing bespoke cavity barriers for inhibiting the spread of smoke and fire in a building, said method comprising the steps of producing an elongate rectangular block of high density interwoven mineral wool, coating the produced block on at least one end or side surface with a material which intumesces in the presence of fire, and cutting from the coated elongate block a plurality of cavity barriers of the same or different dimensions .
The coating step may precede or follow the cutting step.
Typically, the density of the rectangular block of interwoven mineral wool is 240 kg/m3.
Typically, the thickness of the rectangular block is 20mm and the depth is 60mm.
The high density and interwoven and non-aligned mineral wall fibrous content will ensure that rectangular block in accordance with this invention has high U-Value thermal insulation and can be installed either vertically, horizontally or inclined without any deterioration of its properties .
In a second aspect, the invention provides a method of producing bespoke cavity barriers for inhibiting the spread of smoke and fire in a building, said method comprising the steps of producing an elongate rectangular block of high density interwoven mineral wool, coating the produced block on at least two opposed surfaces with a coating of a material which intumesces in the presence of fire, and cutting from the coated elongate block a plurality of cavity barriers of the same or different dimensions.
In a third aspect, the invention provides bespoke cavity barriers produced in accordance with the preceding five paragraphs .
Brief Description of the Drawings
The invention will now be described by way of example only with reference to the accompanying diagrammatic drawing in which the sole Figure is an isometric view of a cavity wall fire resistant block of high density interwoven wool material from which bespoke cavity barriers in accordance with the invention are produced.
Detailed Description of the Invention
The illustrated rectangular elongate cavity wall block 10 is produced from high density interwoven mineral wool and is coated on its upper and lower surfaces 12 with a coating of an intumescent material. Typically, the thickness and width of the block are 600mm and
1200mm respectively and the length is a multiple of the width.
This length is typically 1750 cm.
The high density and interwoven non-aligned mineral wool content of the block 10 ensures that it has a high U-Value thermal insulation and that the block can be installed either vertically, horizontally or inclined.
Each upper and lower surface 12 is coated with a liquid coating of an intumescent material such as that supplied by the Applicant under its ENVIROGRAF registered trademark. This coating has been tested to BS476 Part 22 and European Standard EN1363-1 achieving an integrity of 4 hours.
The cavity wall block 10 can readily be accurately cut to any required length and configuration as and when required without any damage or harm to the applied coatings of intumescent material.
Fixings 14 may be provided to enable the wall block and/or items cut from the block to be attached to walls and other features of a building to prevent the spread of fire and smoke in the event of a fire occurring. These fixings may be simply pushed into the sides of the block at required locations.
The cavity wall blocks can be installed horizontally, vertically or, indeed, at any angle between horizontal and vertical.
The intumescent coating of a cavity wall block in accordance with the invention may be undertaken immediately following its manufacture or on site at its point of use. In the latter situation, the coating can be simply brushed or sprayed onto those surfaces of a given block which best provide protection against the spread of smoke and flames in the event of a fire. Thus, in order to fill a ventilation gap, only one face of the block would need to be coated.
Hitherto, cavity barriers have provided only limited protection against the spread of smoke and fire. Where they have been employed, they have generally been supplied for a particular function or location, for example spanning the vertical space between adjoining walls of a building.
One major advantage of cavity barriers in accordance with this invention is that they are bespoke, that is to say they can readily be cut to any required shape and/or size from a standard block as illustrated in Figure 1.
Thus, cavity barriers in accordance with this invention provide, in combination, full protection against the spread of fire and smoke for periods of time sufficient for any fire to be brought under control and any residents evacuated from the building.
Cavity barriers in accordance with the invention have successfully completed fire tests in excess of 130 minutes without any loss of integrity.
It will be appreciated that the foregoing is merely exemplary of cavity wall barriers in accordance with the invention and that various modifications can be made thereto without departing from the invention as claimed in the appended claims .
