Abstract

254,943. Kreissig, E. Nov. 6, 1925. Springs, arrangement of.-In spring suspensions for vehicles and parts of machinery in which the reaction of the spring on the supported body is constant or substantially constant throughout the displacement of the body, only a part of the spring is subjected to stress, the extent of the part varying with the displacement, but the stress throughout that part remains constant or substantially constant. The arrangement shown diagrammatically in Fig. 2, comprises a lever i pivoted at o' and formed with arcuate surfaces l, k co-axial with the pivot o<l>. A mass G is suspended by a flexible connection f bearing on the surface 1, and a spring n connected to the surface k at m bears against a fixed roller p. Such a system is stated to be in equilibrium for all positions of the lever, and in order to stabilize the system in a central position the radius of the surface k or the cross-section of the spring n may be varied, or weak centralizing springs may be added. In the arrangement shown in Fig. 3, the lever i is pivoted at o' to the axle and supports the body K by means of links s which are connected to a nut t travelling on a rotatable screw u which is mounted in the lever and carries a ratchet wheel v. Spring buffers w are mounted on the body above and below the lever, and upper and lower spring controlled pawls x are pivoted on the body and axle respectively. This arrangement is selfadjusting for variations in load.
