Variable-speed gearing comprises a plurality of driving-shafts A, A<1>, A<2>, Figs. 1, 2 and 3, geared together and always simultaneously operative and a clutch on each shaft through which a different speed is imparted to a single driven shaft C. A wheel B fast on shaft A constantly meshes with wheels B<1>, B<2> loose on the shafts A<1>, A<2> respectively. The wheels B<1>, B<2> are connected also by a wheel H loose on a countershaft J for reversing. Upon these four shafts are clutches D, D<2>, D<4>, D<7> which are released so as to be pressed into action by their springs one at a time by a. cam plate L which turns about a pivot-shaft L<1> and is actuated by a lever L<4>. Each of the shafts passes through an arcuate slot in the plate. An extension C<1> of the shaft C carries a triple spur wheel F, F', F<2> engaged by toothed gears G, G<1>, K fast on the shafts A<1>, A<2>, J, respectively, for two reduced speeds and reversed driving, the high speed being a direct drive through clutch D, D<1>. The shafts A, A<1>, A<2> may be driven by separate engines, or, as shown in Fig. 4, by separate pistons working in cylinders M, M<1>, M<2> having a common combustion chamber N furnished with three inlet valves n, n<1>, n<2> simultaneously operated, and corresponding exhaust valves and sparking-plugs.
