Abstract
253,086. Akt.-Ges. der Maschinenfabriken Escher, Wyss, et Cie. June 6, 1925, [Convention date]. Stuffing-boxes, substitutes for; connected to source of high pressure; draining.-In devices for packing rotary shafts, particularly applicable for the shafts of rotary compressors, a pump supplies liquid to a chamber surrounding the shaft, the liquid escaping to a chamber in the interior of the machine and to a chamber open to the atmosphere, the level in the latter chamber being controlled by a float-operated valve. The liquid may be a lubricant and may be supplied by the pump to the bearings also. A pump 9, Fig. 1, circulates oil from a chamber 12, open to the atmosphere, to a chamber 10 surrounding the shaft, a second chamber 20 being supplied by a pump 7 in a chamber 6, connected with the interior of the machine. The oil escapes along the shaft to the chamber 6 and to the chamber 12 by a pipe 11. A balance is maintained by means of a chamber 15 communicating with the chamber 12 by a pipe controlled by a float-operated valve 17. In a modification the pump 7 is dispensed with, excess oil in the chamber 6 passing to the chamber 12 through a pipe controlled by a float-operated valve. In a further modification the pump 9 and an external pump drawing oil from the chamber 6 discharge through a common pipe to the chamber 10, a branch pipe discharging excess oil to the chamber 12 under the control of a float-operated valve. Alternatively the pump 9 and the pump drawing oil from the chamber 6 supply separate chambers in the packing box. In this case excess oil passes from the discharge pipe of the second pump to the chamber 6 under the control of a float-operated valve, while the suction pipe of the pump 9 is controlled by a downwardly operating float valve in the chamber 12 which closes when the level in the chamber 12 falls. The pump 9 may draw from a casing 29, Fig. 7, supplied with oil from the chamber 6 and from the chamber 12 under the control of an oscillating valve 17 operated by a float. Oil escaping back to the chamber 6 passes below the level of the oil in the chamber by a pipe 32. The pumps may be replaced by a screw 9, Fig. 4, on the shaft which discharges oil towards the chamber 6. The chamber is under pressure and discharges oil by a pipe 22 to the chamber 10, excess oil passing to the chamber 12 under the control of a float-operated valve 17. In a modification the shaft has two screws of opposite hand which draw oil from the chamber 12 and discharge it along the shaft towards the chamber and towards a passage leading to the chamber 12. The chamber 6 communicates with the chamber 12 through a passage controlled by a float valve.
