Description
An adiustable electronic display board for a vehicle
Field of the Invention
The present invention relates to an adjustable electronic display board for a vehicle.
More particularly, the present invention relates to an adjustable electronic display board for a vehicle with an illuminated display.
Background
Buses, coaches, trucks and other commercial vehicles are equipped with static graphical display symbols to indicate that they are in use. For example, a vehicle used to transfer children to a school (a school bus) will display a vinyl sticker or static display board to indicate to other road users that the vehicle is in use, and the purpose of the vehicle, and so that they are aware when the vehicle is stopped that there are likely to be children in the vicinity who may walk or run across the road without looking. A commercial truck may display a loading/unloading' when loading or unloading in order to warn other road users that personnel are in the vicinity of the vehicle, and may be unsighted by boxes or similar, and may be moving boxes and other goods around the vehicle.
Often the static display boards and stickers are displayed in less than ideal locations and can be difficult for other road users to register. As these can easily be missed or overlooked by other road users, this can lead to hazardous incidents or accidents.
For example, a driver may pass a stationary school bus as it is unloading without using the necessary maximum caution.
Prior Art
Accordingly a number of patent applications have been filed in an attempt to resolve the problem or similar, including the following: US20140005860 describes and shows a digital vanity display system for a motor vehicle, whereby a digital screen is connectable to the interior or exterior of the vehicle and a given message or symbol can be displayed therefrom via the driver or passenger's wireless input thereto. The display device includes a digital display having an antiglare coating for clarity, along with a display body for housing the system elements that allow for the sign operation, wireless communications, and power. A handheld device within the vehicle, such as a phone or tablet, is wirelessly paired to the display system such that inputs from the user can be wirelessly communicated thereto to update the sign. It is contemplated that the sign function as a vehicle personalization device, a messaging system for nearby motorists, a warning sign, and a traffic signal between vehicles.
US20120013454 describes and shows an elevated stop indicator light system for vehicles such as school buses that comprises a translucent or transparent tubular housing having a strip of light emitting diodes extending therethrough, the housing being secured to a drip rail extending along and above side and/or rear windows of the vehicle by clips fastened to the vehicle. Operation of the elevated light system is coordinated with conventional warning devices, such as a fold-out stop sign and flashing red lights of the bus. The elevation of the stop indicator light system provides a highly visible warning system for surrounding traffic when the view of the conventional warning sign on the side of the bus is obscured by traffic.
US5963345 describes and shows a warning indicator that comprises a lamp hidden adjacent to the roof of a vehicle, such as a school bus, and a transmission hologram decal containing a hologram that is mounted on a front or rear window of the vehicle.
The lamp projects a beam of light downward onto the transmission hologram decal where it is diffracted by the hologram into a predetermined angular field of view at the front of rear of the vehicle. The hologram projects an image, such as the word "STOP", for example, to warn drivers of other vehicles that the vehicle, such as the school bus, for example, has come to a stop. The hologram is preferentially designed
to have an asymmetrically-shaped field of view.
In contrast the present invention provides an adjustable electronic display board for a vehicle that can be easily and quickly adjusted between a number of different standard displays, which can be easily fitted to vehicles in place of static display boards or stickers that are easily overlooked by other road users, and which provides an illuminated display that is easily and quickly registerable by other road users.

Detailed Description of Figures
An embodiment of the present invention will now be described with reference to the figures.
As shown in figure 1, the adjustable electronic display board 1 of this embodiment of the present invention has two main sub-components: a display screen 2, and a control unit 3.
The display screen shown in figure 1 is a front display screen 2a for use at the front of a vehicle such as a bus, minibus, truck, lorry or similar. The electronic display board 1 also has a rear display screen 4a as will be described in detail below. The front display screen 2a is an LED screen, a number of LED bulbs arranged to form a dot matrix, so that selective illumination of a number of the LED bulbs produces an image. The image produced can be changed by changing which of the bulbs are illuminated. The screen has a size of 200mm x 200mm. The bulbs illuminate so that the image produced can be seen clearly even with no other illumination or low ambient illumination, for example in bad or murky weather, after dark, or in the early morning or twilight conditions.
The screen 2a is provided with a frame 5. The frame 5 aftaches via an adhesive or similar non-destructive mechanism to a vehicle window -e.g. the front window of a coach or bus. The three-sided frame as shown in figure allows display screen to be slotted into the frame from above via the open top, and securely held in position.
This allows a user to easily mount the display in a vehicle.
The control unit 3 has a main part formed as a control box with a user interface on the upper surface. The box of the control unit 3 can be mounted in a convenient position for a vehicle driver or operator, for example on or close to the dash board.
The main purpose of the control unit 3 is to allow a user to switch easily and conveniently between a number of pre-set images which are pre-programmed or pre-loaded into the control unit 3. The control unit 3 has a switch comprising a central knob or dial 4 that can be rotated by a user between a number of positions, for example five discrete positions as shown in figure 2b, each position corresponding to a different pre-programmed image. Rotation of the knob 4 between the positions changes the displayed image. The control unit 3 is provided with illuminated graphics around the knob 4 which show which image has been chosen, and which illuminate to provide further ease of identification. The control unit 3 is connected to the display screens 2a and 4a via cables 7, which also connect the control unit to the vehicles power supply, normally a 12V or 24V battery supply. The power cable can be hard-wired in place, or power can be drawn via the cigarette lighter socket in a similar manner to a GPS unit. The control unit can be configured to come on automatically, or to have a separate on/off switch. A user either turns the unit on automatically with a first manual movement and then selects the particular image required with a second movement (turning the dial), or the unit activates automatically (e.g. as the engine is turned on) and a user only needs a single manual movement (turn the dial) to then select an image.
The combination of pre-set images and manually operable switch allows a user to easily and quickly switch between different images without having to reprogram the control unit or initially access a control program to change the image. This makes changing uses or changing the display much simpler for a user. A rotatable knob provides an intuitive interface for a user, with the pictograms helping to ensure this is as intuitive as possible. To this end, it is preferred that the dial 4 will click' between discrete positions rather than rotate freely, as this helps to make the interface more intuitive for a user.
The rear screen 2b is formed from four of the same LED displays as the front screen, arranged in a square, via a rear frame 5b that attaches via an adhesive or similar non-destructive mechanism to a vehicle rear window in a similar manner to front frame 5a. It can be seen that the size of the rear screen is substantially 400mm x 400mm. Using the same LED displays allows manufacturing and logistics to be simplified as a single screen can be used to create all the displays.
The control unit 3 in this embodiment is further configured so that it can connect to the brake system of the vehicle. When the brakes are applied, the displays on the front and rear screens will brighten in conjunction with the brake lights when applied.
This helps to increase visibility and registrability (conscious acknowledgement -a user registering the display) of the display to other road users. The control unit 3 can also be configured for connection to the main passenger door of the vehicle such that when the door is open the display or displays on the display screen or screens will flash. This also helps to increase visibility and registrability of the display to other road users.
In this embodiment, the pre-set images comprise two or more of the following well-known signs: loading/unloading, disabled badge, school bus sign, elderly people sign, school children sign, child-on-board. These signs allow a vehicle fitted with the display to be quickly and easily used for a variety of common purposes, for example a coach can be used as a school bus and as a mobility vehicle, with an operator switching between the two displays quickly and easily.
The invention has been described by way of examples only and it will be appreciated that variation may be made to the above-mentioned embodiments without departing from the scope of invention. Firstly it will be understood that any features described in relation to any particular embodiment may be featured in combinations with other embodiments.
With respect to the specification therefore, it is to be realised that the optimum dimensional relationships for the parts of the invention, to include variations in size, materials, shape, form, function and manner of operation, assembly and use, are deemed readily apparent and obvious to one skilled in the art, and all equivalent relationships to those illustrated in the drawings and described in the specification are intended to be encompassed by the present invention.
Therefore, the foregoing is considered as illustrative only of the principles of the invention, with variation and implementation obvious and clear on the basis of either common general knowledge or of expert knowledge in the field concerned. Further, since numerous modifications and changes will readily occur to those skilled in the art, it is not desired to limit the invention to the exact construction and operation shown and described, and accordingly, all suitable modifications and equivalents may be resorted to, falling within the scope of the invention as set out in the accompanying claims.
