Abstract

252,779. Brown, W. J., Churcher, B. A. G., and Metropolitan-Vickers Electrical Co., Ltd. March 3, 1925. Stroboscopic apparatus for giving intermittent illumination of bodies having a periodic movement comprises an electric glow discharge or like rapidly quenching lamp and an oscillatory electrical circuit for energizing the lamp at any desired frequency without the necessity of any operative connection with the body or apparatus under examination. A glow discharge lamp 1 having a reflector 2 is connected across an oscillatory circuit 4 connected to the anode of a triode 7 and to a source of potential 8. The circuit also comprises a variable inductance 5 in parallel with a variable condenser 6. A reaction coil 9 is connected in the grid circuit of the triode 7 and coupled with the inductance 5. In a modification the lamp 1 is connected in the anode circuit of an amplifying value, the grid of which is connected to the anode of the triode 7. The lamp 1 may also be connected to a source of direct current through a relay actuated by the anode circuit. Frequency calibration of the triode circuit enables the apparatus to be used for speed measurements.
