Abstract

251,325. Smith, C. H. Jan. 26, 1925. Ornamenting.-Copper plates are decorated by applying a stopping-off material, such as lamp black, to the surface of the plate, forming a design by scraping bright lines thereon, applying flux to the exposed surface, applying a metal such as lead, tin, zinc, or antimony, or an alloy thereof, in the form of a powder or by means of a soldering-iron, and heating the plate to a temperature of from 800‹ C. to 1,000‹ C. Before heating the plate, it is cleaned off and covered with clav mixed with borax or other flux. Alternatively, those parts of the plate not covered by the design may be treated with borax to produce an oxidized surface, or with nitre or salammoniac to produce a bright surface. The colour of the oxidized surface may be varied by employing bases such as soda or potash.
