Abstract
248,849. Turner, L. C. Dec. 13, 1924. Inductances.-In air-spaced electric coils, the conductor is wound to cross the coil from the inner to the other edge, or from one side to the other, and vice versa repeatedly, each crossing being displaced about a winding support between the edges or sides of the coil to form an obtuse angle across the coil and successive turns being air-spaced by relative displacement around the coil. The coil may be wound as shown in Fig. 1 about three concentric circles a - - c of parallel pins, the intermediate pins b being radially aligned with the outer pins a or, as shown, with the inner pins c. After the completion of one turn as shown, the winding is continued to form similar, displaced, air-spaced turns, the air spaces on the outer part of the finished coil being of different shape from those on the inner part and bunching of the turns at crossing points being avoided. In a modification, Fig. 4, the conductor is wound about a cylindrical formed with three circles a, b, c of radial pins, the crossings from one side to the other being displaced about the pins b into obtuse angular formation as shown to produce air spaces of different shapes at opposite sides of the pins b and the pins b being aligned with the pins c and opposite the spaces between the pins a. Adjacent turns may be insulated by the cotton covering on the wire or by strips of non-conducting material. Flexible non-conducting material may be looped and tied about crossing points of the winding to maintain the angular formation. The winding pins are round or oval to round the wire passing around them. The Provisional Specification refers to windings about two rows of pins and to square, oblong, semicircular, and oval coils.
