Abstract
A motor or generator cooling system employs a hollow conductive winding that acts as a coolant channel and to create an electromagnetic field. The winding is cooled internally by a liquid coolant or a gaseous refrigerant. The liquid can be de-ionised and be used to heat a motor. The winding material can be circular copper or nickel tubing such as automotive brake pipe and surrounded by a sheath of insulating material such as plastics, PTFE or silicon that can take the coolant away to a reservoir or radiator without conducting current. An electrical connection can connect to the outside of the winding, piercing the insulating sheath. The cooling system can cause motor components, including permanent magnets, to operate at low temperature and prolong the life of the motor. It can be used for wheel motors in electric vehicles.
