Abstract
247,413. Comery, G. H., and Rose, H. March 19, 1925. Crystal detectors.-The crystal of a detector is mounted between spring metal claws carried by an element adapted to be slid in opposite directions within a stationary and rigid part, such movement effecting the opening and closing of the claws. The detector, Fig. 1, comprises a glass cylinder 1 carried between end discs 2 in one of which is mounted the catwhisker holder 3. Fixed centrally within the other disc is a metal bush 4 which is secured in the forked bracket 6 by a nut 5. An externally threaded spindle 8 is adapted to slide within a hole 7 in the bush 4 and carries a number of spring metal claws 9 adapted to receive the crystal. The spindle 8 is drawn in and out of the hole 7 by turning a milled nut 10. The claws 9 may be accommodated and guided in notches 11 provided at the inner end of the hole 7 in the bush 4. In a modification, Fig. 5, the spindle 8 instead of being threaded externally is surrounded by a coiled spring 12 acting to draw the claws 9 into the hole 7. In a further modification, the end disc 2 is connected directly to the bracket 6 and the bush 4 is screwed or otherwise detachably fitted in the disc so that the bush, crystal and holder can be removed from the disc without dismantling the glass cylinder or other parts of the detector.
