Abstract
246,709. Berry, E. E. May 20, 1925. Stuffing-boxes, substitutes jor.-In a joint between a revolving drying-cylinder 1 for paper manufacture and a stationary steam box 2, a packing-ring 6 is employed consisting of or impregnated with graphite or carbon. The ring has preferably a flat face on one side and a spherical face on the other side. Steam is supplied to the box 2 by a pipe 3 and the pressure in the box may be balanced by admitting steam to the outer face of the end cover 19 by a passage 33. The recess in the cover is enclosed by a diaphragm 30, secured to the box by a ring 31, and to a collar 25a on a support 26 by a bolt 38. The box 2 is also pressed axially by a spring 35. The interior of the cylinder is drained by a pipe 12 discharging through an opening 16 and pipe 18. In a modification the passage 33 and diaphragm 30 are dispensed with and the spring 35 takes its abutment on the collar 25a.
