Abstract

The unit has a rotating cylinder 2 with perforating edges 4, and an anvil belt 10 having a resilient surface. Material 20 passes between the cylinder 2 and the co-rotating belt 10. Each perforating edge 4 penetrates the material 20 and depresses the resilient surface of the belt 10. The belt 10 recovers as it rotates away from the cylinder 2. The belt's 10 resilient surface preferably comprises a polyurethane rubber. The belt 10 preferably rotates about rollers 11A, 11B. The rows of perforating edges 4 may form part of a cutting shim 3 mounted on a magnetic cylinder 2. The unit perforates paper.

Description

Title: Rotary Cutting Unit The present invention relates to rotary cutting unit, and especially a rotary cutting unit adapted to create perforations in a number of different materials such as paper.
When forming perforation in material such as paper it is common practice to pass material through a rotary cutting unit that fits within a rotary cutting station, with the station and unit forming a through cutting system. The unit has a cutting shim in the form of a sheet which is placed around a rotating magnetic cylinder, and an anvil roller which co-rotates with the cutting shim. The cutting shim has a number of perforating edges which pierce the material against the anvil roller to create the perforations in the material.
A problem with this is that the gap between the cutting shim and the anvil cylinder has to be kept to within a fine tolerance. If the gap is too large the perforations are not formed properly. If the gap is too small, the perforating edges wear against the anvil roller.
The invention seeks to provide a solution to this problem.
According to the present invention there is provided a rotary cutting unit for creating perforations in material comprising a first rotating cylinder with a plurality of perforating edges thereon and an anvil belt having a resilient surface adapted to co-rotate adjacent the first cylinder with material passing between the cylinder and the belt, in use the gap between the perforating edges and the belt is adjusted such that the each perforating edge penetrates the material and depresses the resilient surface of the belt as it enters the gap and the surface of the belt recovers as it rotates away from the cylinder.
The belt may have a polyurethane surface.
An embodiment of the invention will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawings in which: Figure I shows a schematic perspective view of a part of rotary cutting unit for perforating paper or other material, and Figure 2 shows a cross section view of a cutting shim on a magnetic cylinder and anvil belt.
Referring to Figures 1 and 2 there is shown schematically part of a rotary cutting unit I for perforating paper or other material.
Unit I has a first rotating roller having a magnetic roller 2 with a cutting shim 3 thereon in the form of a sheet which is placed around a rotating magnetic cylinder 2. Cutting shim 3 has a plurality of rows perforating edges 4 on its surface.
Unit I also has an anvil belt 10 having a resilient surface, e.g. with a polyurethane surface. Belt is supported to rotate around a main roller I IA and a take up roller 118. Belt 10 co-rotates adjacent the first magnetic cylinder 2 with cuffing shim 3 with paper or other material 20 passing between the magnetic roller 2 with cutting shim 3 and the belt 10.
In use the gap between the perforating edges 4 and the belt 10 is adjusted such that the each perforating edge penetrates the paper or other material being converted and makes a depression 12 in the resilient surface of the belt as it enters the gap (See Figure 2) and the surface of the belt recovers as it rotates away from the cylinder 2. The perforating edges create perforations 21 in the paper 20.
The belt 10 has a surface sufficiently hard to act as an anvil to allow the perforating edges to cut the perforation in the papers but not so hard as to wear the perforating edges.
The invention may take a form different to that specifically described above. For example instead of the anvil belt being supported between two rollers as shown, it could be in the form of a sleeve with a resilient surface around a single roller.
Further modifications will be apparent to those skilled in the art without departing from the scope of the present invention. a
