Diaphragms not associated with tone-arms, arrangement of f and supporting.-In gramophones employing large diaphragms in substantially upright position when playing and adapted to fold down substantially parallel with the turntable when out of use, the diaphragm in folding down is also moved bodily away from the axis about which it swings across the record. With this construction applied to cabinet machines, a diaphragm of greater diameter than the distance between the pivot axis of the tone-arm and the centre of the turntable can be employed. The diaphragm frame 22 is horizontally pivoted by screws 23 to a yoke bracket 16 which is horizontally pivoted by screws 17 to an arm 7 pivoted by a horizintal bolt 9 to a bracket 1 turning on vertical pivots in a fixing 2 at one side of a platform 3 of the machine. The folding movement of the diaphragm frame 22 about the pivot screws 23, 17 is controlled by a rod 28 carrying a bracket 27 pivoted to the lower part of the frame 22, preferably the block 25 carrying the stylus socket 26, and sliding in friction bearings 33 fitted with felt packings 34. The brackets 25, 27 contact to form a stop for the diaphragm frame in playing position, and a spring 37 engages a notch 36 in the rod 28 to oppose displacement.' A spring plunger 12 in a sleeve 19 on the arm partially supports the arm and diaphragm.
