Abstract
In the modification of the ammonia soda process described in the parent Specification in which ammonium chloride and sodium bicarbonate are alternately precipitated from a mother liquid which also contains a sodium or ammonium salt other than the chloride or carbonate which is more soluble than sodium bicarbonate, thiocyanate of sodium or ammonium is used as the readily soluble salt. Crude thiocyanates obtained in gas purification processes containing other readily soluble salts such as thiosulphates, sulphates, polythionates, and polysulphides besides organic impurities may be used in place of the pure thiocyanates. In an example solid ammonium bicarbonate is added to a liquor saturated with sodium and ammonium chlorides and also containing ammonium thiocyanate. The precipitated sodium bicarbonate is separated, more thiocyanate added if necessary and a quantity of sodium chloride equivalent to the bicarbonate which has been removed then introduced. On cooling, ammonium chloride is precipitated, leaving a mother liquor ready for a further addition of ammonium bicarbonate.
