Abstract
A cyclic process for the production of potassium nitrate and soda, with ammonium chloride as a bye-product, comprises the following steps :--(1) Gypsum is reacted with the mother liquor of an ammonia-soda process containing ammonium carbonate and bicarbonate to form a precipitate of calcium carbonate and a solution of ammonium sulphate. After separation of the calcium carbonate the liquor is treated with sylvinite and ammonia to form a precipitate of glaserite (3K2SO4, Na2SO4) and potassium chloride, which, after separation, is treated with water to form potassium sulphate, together with a solution of sodium chloride which is returned to the process. (2) The glaserite-potassium chloride mother liquor, containing sodium and ammonium chlorides, is cooled to separate part of its ammonium chloride and is then subjected to the Solvay process to form soda, the mother liquor of which is used in step (1). (3) The calcium carbonate and potassium sulphate from step (1) are reacted with nitric acid to form gypsum, which is separated and used in step (1), and a solution of potassium nitrate which is evaporated or cooled to yield the solid, the resulting mother liquor being utilized to dissolve further quantities of the potassium sulphate obtained from glaserite in step (1). The ammonium chloride obtained in step (2) may be used as a source of the ammonia used in step (1).
