Abstract

Trinitrotoluene is freed from tetranitromethane by passing it from a melting tank a through nozzles c where it is atomized by heated air or gases or steam admitted through a pipe g from a pump f and heater e, into a chamber d to which heated air or gases or steam is also admitted through a pipe o. The atomized material fails through the chamber and is cooled and solidified by cold air forced into the chamber by a fan f<1>. Gases are withdrawn from the chamber through a pipe h and settling tank k by a pump f<11>.
