Abstract
238,429. Fleming, E. L., and Atlantic Chemical Co., Ltd. Nov. 22, 1924. Boric acid is produced by treating a pulp of crude borate of lime (boronatrocalcite) with hot sulphur dioxide in a saturating pan 3 removing sand, lime and gypsum in a vacuum filter 15 and crystallizing the boric acid in a cooler 18. The pulp is supplied from a pulping-machine 1 through a settling tank 2 to a distributor 6 in the lead-lined saturating pan 3 which is supplied through an atomizer 11 with sulphur dioxide from a sulphur burner 12. The pan is heated by a chamber 4 connected to the exhaust of an oil engine 8. The pulping-machine 1 is driven by the engine 8 and is supplied with hot water from a tank 23 connected with the engine water which receives cold water from a tank 22 fed by a pump driven by the engine. The engine also drives an air compressor for the sulphur burner 12 and a vacuum pump (not shown) connected to the filter 15 and to the vacuum apparatus 20 for drying the crystals of boric acid. Sulphur dioxide escaping from the pan 3 passes to a scrubber 30 charged with borate of lime which when spent, is removed and fed to the pulping-machine.
