Abstract

A canopy assembly includes a shell frame (20) having at least one support tube (14), a fabric body (21), and a flexible rod (22). The support tube (14) has a peripheral wall (141) which is indented inward to define an engaging groove (142). The engaging groove (142) extends along the length of the support tube (14). The engaging groove (142) is opened at an outer surface of the peripheral wall (141). The fabric body (21) has a connecting sleeve portion (211), and a sheet portion (212) connected to the connecting sleeve portion (211). The flexible rod (22) is inserted into the connecting sleeve portion (211). The rod (22) and the connecting sleeve portion (211) are received in the engaging groove (142). The sheet portion (212) extends out from the engaging groove (142). The attachment mechanism may also be used with a storage receptacle (41), both the storage receptacle and the canopy being intended for attachment to a stroller.

Description

1 2418894 FABRIC SHELL STRUCTURES SUCH AS A CANOPY ASSEMBLY,
A STORAGE RECEPTACLE AND THE LIKE
This invention relates to fabric shell structures, more particularly to fabric shell structures, such as S a canopy assembly, a storage receptacle, and the like, each of which includes a fabric body held by a support frame.
A stroller canopy structure for a collapsible stroller is disclosed in U. S. Patent Nos. 4,378,946 and 5,988,669. The canopy structure includes a generally U-shaped bail which is pivotally connected to two oppositearmsofastrollerhandleassembly, andacanopy fabric having two end parts connected respectively to the bail and the handle assembly so that the canopy structure may be folded or unfolded.
However, assembly of the aforesaid canopy structure is rather troublesome since the canopy fabric has to cover the bail or the handle assembly, and then must be secured thereto by sewing or by using male-female fasteners. Furthermore, the sewing threads are exposed so that an outer appearance of the stroller is unappealing.
Therefore, the object of the present invention is to provide a fabric shell structure that can be easily assembled.
According to one aspect of this invention, a canopy assembly comprises a shell frame having at least one support tube, a fabric body, and a flexible rod. The support tube has a peripheral wall. The peripheral wall is indented inward to define an engaging groove and a groove wall which confines the engaging groove. The engaging groove and the groove wall extend along the length of the support tube. The engaging groove is opened at an outer surface of the peripheral wall. The fabric body has a connecting sleeve portion, and a sheet portion connected to the connecting sleeve portion. The flexible rod is inserted into the connecting sleeve portion. The rod and the connecting sleeve portion are received in the engaging groove. The sheet portion extends out from the engaging groove.
According to another aspect of this invention, a stroller comprises a stroller frame, and a canopy assembly mounted on the stroller frame. The canopy assembly includes a shell frame having at least one support tube. The support tube has a peripheral wall.
The peripheral wall is indented inward to define an engaging groove and a groove wall which confines the engaging groove. The engaging groove and the groove wall extend along the length of the support tube. The engaging groove is opened at an outer surface of the peripheral wall. The fabric body has a connecting sleeve portion, and a sheet portion connected to the connecting sleeve portion. The flexible rod is inserted into the connecting sleeve portion. The rod and the connecting sleeve portion are received in the engaging groove. The sheet portion extends out from the engaging groove.
According to a yet another aspect of this invention, a storage receptacle for a stroller comprises a shell S frame adapted to be mounted on the stroller and having at least one support tube, a fabric body, and a flexible rod. The support tube has a peripheral wall. The peripheralwallisindentedinwardto define an engaging groove and a groove wall which confines the engaging groove. The engaging groove and the groove wall extend along thelengthof the support tube.The engaging groove is opened at an outer surface of the peripheral wall.
The fabric body has a connecting sleeve portion, and a sheet portion connected to the connecting sleeve portion. Theflexiblerodisinsertedintotheconnecting sleeveportion. Therodandtheconnectingsleeveportion are received in the engaging groove. The sheet portion extends out from the engaging groove.
According to a further aspect of this invention, a stroller comprises a stroller frame, and a fabric shell structuremountedonthestrollerframe. Thefabricshell structure includes a shell frame having at least one support tube, a fabric body, and a flexible rod. The support tube has a peripheral wall. The peripheral wall is indented inward to define an engaging groove and a groove wall which confines the engaging groove. The engaging groove and the groove wall extend along the length of the support tube. The engaging groove is opened at an outer surface of the peripheral wall. The fabric body has a connecting sleeve portion, and a sheet portion connected to the connecting sleeve portion. The flexible rod is inserted into the connecting sleeve portion. The rod and the connecting sleeve portion are received in the engaging groove. The sheet portion extends out from the engaging groove.
Other features and advantages of the present invention will become apparent in the following detailed description of the preferred embodiment with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: Figure 1 is a schematic side view of a stroller incorporating a canopy assembly of the preferred IS embodiment of the present invention; Figure 2 is a fragmentary exploded perspective view of a pivot device of the preferred embodiment; Figure 3 is a perspective view of a support tube of the preferred embodiment; Figure 4 is a fragmentary sectional view of the support tube taken along line IV-IV of Figure 3; Figure 5 is a schematic view illustrating the canopy assembly in an extended position; and Figure 6 is a fragmentary sectional view of the preferred embodiment, illustrating how a flexible rod and a fabric body are inserted into the support tube.
Referring to Figure 1, the preferred embodiment of a canopy assembly 2 according to the present invention is adapted to be mounted on an infant stroller, and is shown to comprise a shell frame 20, and a fabric body 21.
S The infant stroller has a frame 1 which includes a front wheeled frame 11, and a rear wheeled frame 12 connected to the front wheeled frame 11. The shell frame 20includesafirstsupporttube14, end a second support tube 15. The front and rear wheeled frames 11, 12 are provided with wheel assemblies 13. Since the structures of the front and rear wheeled frames 11, 12 are not pertinent to the present invention, a detailed description of the same will be dispensed herewith for the sake of brevity.
IS Each of the first and second support tubes 14, 15 has two opposite ends connected to top ends of the front wheeled frame 11 through pivot devices 3 so that the first and second support tubes 14, 15 can pivot forward and rearward relative to each other.
Referring to Figure 2, only one pivot device 3 that connects each end of the two support tubes 14, 15 to one of the top ends of the front wheeled frame 11 is illustrated forexplaining the pivot connectionbetween the support tubes 14, 15 and the front wheeled frame 11. The pivot device 3 has a fixed seat 31 connected fixedly to the front wheeled frame 11, a first pivot seat 32 connected to said one end of the second support tube 15, and a second pivot seat 33 connected to the first support tube 14. A first engaging member 34 is disposed between the first pivot seat 32 and the fixed seat 31, and a second engaging member 35 is disposed between the first and second pivot seats 32, 33. The fixed seat 31, the first engaging member 34, the first pivot seat 32, the second engaging member 35 and the second pivot seat 33 are held together by a shaft 36 that extends through all of them to permit their rotations.
The second engaging member 35 has an outer circumference provided with a toothed portion 351, and an inner area formed with a slot portion 352. An inner peripheral face of a receiving hole 330 in the second pivot seat 33 is formed with a gear portion 331. When the second engaging member 35 is received within the receiving hole 330, the toothed portion 351 meshes with the gear portion 331. The slot portion 352 provides a compressible space so that the toothed portion 351 can becompressedinwardly end can move relative to the gear portion 331. With this configuration of the toothed portion 351 meshed with the gear portion 331, when the first support tube 14 pivots relative to the second support tube 15 for indexing, a clicking sound will be produced.
Similarly, the first engaging member 34 is received within a receiving hole (not shown) in the fixed seat 31, and has a toothed portion 341 and a slot portion 342 so that when the second support tube 15 pivots relative to the front wheeled frame 11 for indexing, a clicking sound is also produced.
S Referring to Figures 3 and 4, the first support tube 14 is U-shaped, and has a peripheral wall 141. The peripheral wallisindentedinwardto define an engaging groove 142, and a groove wall 143 which confines the engaging groove 143. The engaging groove 142 and the groove wall 143 extend along the length of the first support tube 14. The engaging groove 142 is opened at an outer surface of the peripheral wall 141.
Referring to Figure 5, in combination with Figure 1, flexible rods 22 are attached to the fabric body 21 to stretch the fabric body 21. Each flexible rod 22 is madeofanelasticandflexiblematerial,suchasplastic tubing. As shown in Figure 6, the fabric body 21 has a connecting sleeve portion 211, and a sheet portion 212 connected to the connecting sleeve portion 211. The connecting sleeve portion 211 is sewn to allow for insertion of the flexible rod 22 intheconnecting sleeve portion 211. The plastic tubing of each flexible rod 22 has a higher stiffness than that of the fabric body 21, so that the flexible rods 22 form a skeleton of the canopy assembly 2. The street portion 212 may be provided with a screened window 213, and a cover flap 214 for covering the screened window 213. The user may choose to open or close the screened window 213 as desired by manipulating the cover flap 214.
In use, the connecting sleeve portion 211 and the flexible rod 22 of a front edge of the fabric body 21 are inserted into the engaging groove 142 in the first support tube 14, whereas the sheet portion 212 extends out from the engaging groove 142, and is located externally to the first support tube 14. The connecting sleeve portion 211 and the flexible rod 22 are thereby positioned in the engaging groove 142 so that the front edge of the fabric body 21 is secured to the first support tube 14.
A rear edge of the fabric body 21 is connected to the second support tube 15 by using a method similar to that used to connect the fabric body 21 to the first support tube 14, or by using male and female fasteners to fasten the fabric body 21 to the second support tube 15. After the first and second support tubes 14, 15 are connected to the front wheeled framellthrough the pivot devices 3, the first support tube 14 may be pivoted away from the second support tube 15 so that the canopy assembly 2 is in an expanded and open state, and may be pivoted toward the second support tube 15 so that the canopy assembly is in a collapsed and closed position.
The configuration of the canopy assembly 2 of the present invention prevents exposure of the sewing threads, and the first support tube 14 is usually made of metal and is formed integrally, thereby enhancing the outer appearance of the stroller.
It should be noted that the connecting method of the canopy assembly 2 of the present invention only involves inserting of the connecting sleeve portion 211 of the fabric body 21 and the flexible rod 22 into the engaging groove 142 in the first support tube 14 so that the canopy assembly 2 may be easily assembled on the infant stroller Although the first support tube 14 has a U-shape in this embodiment, its shape is not limited thereto and may have any suitable shape which can support the fabric body 21.
Referring back to Figure 1, the aforementioned connecting method may also be applied to a storage receptacle 4 on a bottom portion of the infant stroller.
The storage receptacle 4 includes a shell frame 41 and a supporting rod 42 that supports the shell frame 41.
The supporting rod 42 may be formed with an engaging groove similar to that of the support tube 14. The shell frame 41 is comparable to the shell frame 20, that is, the shell frame 41 covers a flexible rod (not shown), and is then inserted into the engaging groove in the supporting rod 42 so as to be positioned therein. Since assembly of the storage receptacle 4 is substantially the same as that of the aforementioned canopy assembly 2, a detailed description of the same will be dispensed 1 0 herewith for the sake of brevity.
The construction of the canopy assembly2 and/or the storage receptacle 4 of the present invention may be similarly applied to an infant bassinet, an infant bed, aninfant car seat, swing, and aninfant reclining chair or a rocking chair. 1 1

Claims (1)

  1. CLAIMS: 1. A canopy assembly comprising: a shell frame having at least one
    support tube, said support tube having a peripheral wall, said peripheral wall being indented inward to define an engaging groove and a groove wall which confines said engaging groove, said engaging groove and said groove wall extending along the length of said support tube, said engaging groove being opened at an outer surface of said peripheral wall; a fabric body having a connecting sleeve portion and a sheet portion connected to said connecting sleeve portion; and a flexible rod inserted into said connecting sleeve portion, wherein said rod and said connecting sleeve portion are received in said engaging groove, and said sheet portion extends out from said engaging groove.
    2. A stroller comprising: a stroller frame; and a canopy assembly mounted on said stroller frame, and including a shell frame having at least one support tube, said support tube having a peripheral wall, said peripheral wall being indented inward to define an engaging groove and a groove wall which confines said 1 2 engaging groove, said engaging groove and said groove wall extending along the length of said support tube, said engaging groove being opened at an outer surface of said peripheral wall; a fabric body having a connecting sleeve portion and a sheet portion connected to said connecting sleeve portion; and a flexible rod inserted into said connecting sleeve portion, wherein said rod and said connecting sleeve portion are received in said engaging groove, and said sheet portion extends out from said engaging groove.
    3. A storage receptacle for a stroller, comprising: a shell frame adapted to be mounted on the stroller and having at least one support tube, said support tube having a peripheral wall, said peripheral wall being indented inward to define an engaging groove and a groove wall which confines said engaging groove, said engaging groove and said groove wall extending along the length of said support tube, said engaging groove being opened at an outer surface of said peripheral wall; a fabric body having a connecting sleeve portion and a sheet portion connected to said connecting sleeve portion; and a flexible rod inserted into said connecting 1 3 sleeve portion, wherein said rod and said connecting sleeve portion are received in said engaging groove, and said sheet portion extends out from said engaging groove.
    4. A stroller comprising: a stroller frame; and a fabric shell structure mounted on said stroller frame, and including a shell frame having at least one support tube, said support tube having a peripheral wall, said peripheral wall being indented inward to define an engaging groove and a groove wall which confines said engaging groove, said engaging groove and said groove wall extending along the length of said support tube, said engaging groove being opened at an outer surface of said peripheral wall; a fabric body having a connecting sleeve portion and a sheet portion connected to said connecting sleeve portion; and a flexible rod inserted into said connecting sleeve portion, wherein said rod and said connecting sleeve portion are received in said engaging groove, and said sheet portion extends out from said engaging groove.
    5. The stroller as claimed in Claim 4, wherein said fabric shell structure is formed as a canopy assembly.
    6.ThestrollerasclaimedinClaim4,whereinsaidfabric shell structure is formed as a storage receptacle.
    7.The canopy assembly substantially as hereinbefore 5described with reference to and as illustrated in the accompanying drawings.
