Abstract

Jacks.-A device for thrusting or lifting loads comprises a flexible chain guided within a housing 11 provided with a feeding-member, such as a toothed wheel 8 adapted to engage with rollers 15 on the chain links, and pawls 3 pivoted at 13 on the links and so shaped as to engage and fit between the opposing ends 4, 5 of alternate links when these pass around the wheel 8, thereby causing the chain to assume a rigid bar-like character. When the chain is fed back into the housing, the pawls disengage from the links and take up the position shown at the left of Fig. 1. The link plates are shaped as shown in Fig. 4, and are connected together by pins 2. Thin plates 12 are attached to the sides of the chainlinks to form a continuous guiding-surface thereon. The guideway 10 for the rigid chain is pivoted to the housing to allow the chain to follow the movements of the point of attachment 16 to the load.
