Abstract

Back-pedalling brake and free-wheel arrangements.-In a hub in which a radially expansible driving sleeve c, Fig. 1, and a separate braking sleeve fare provided, a hub ring d, Fig. 2, dis. posed between the driving sleeve c and a shoulder b<1> on the screwed driving member b is adapted to retard the movement of the sleeve c so as to ensure its operation by the driving member b. The sleeve c is made in segments which are contracted by a spring ring C', and is internally screw-threaded to engage the member b, the sides of the threads being inclined so as to expand the sleeve c. The ring d is split at d<4>, Fig. 2, and is formed with a projection d<2> which engages a slot in the hub and prevents relative rotation. During forward pedalling, the sleeve c is moved to the right to engage the ring d, and is expanded so as to clutch the driving member b and the hub together. When the driving member b is held stationary, the driving sleeve c is screwed slightly to the left from the coupling position, and is held against rotation by engagement with the brake member e'. Back-pedalling produces further movement to the left of the driving sleeve c, whereby it expands and also ex. pands the brake sleeve f so that both sleeves tend to check rotation of the hub.
