Abstract

238,121. Pemberton, T. W. Dec. 17, 1924. Fixing by screwed sockets with wedge and like expanding devices.-In devices for securing handles to brooms &c. of the kind comprising a tubular handle fitting slit from the lower end and a taper plug arranged to project from this end and adapted to contact with the bottom of the brush hole so as to expand the split fitting when the handle is screwed in, means are provided for maintaining the plug in functioning relation with the screwed fitting and preventing its detachment therefrom when not applied to the broom. The lower threaded part c of the socket b fitted to the handle a is divided by longitudinal slits f and is expanded to grip the sides of the hole j in the broom head k when the handle is screwed in by the taper plug g, which is maintained in position in the socket before the handle is applied to the broom by means of a transverse pin i passing through a hole k in the taper plug. In the modification shown in Fig. 5, the plug g is maintained in functioning position in the socket b by interengaging ribs l, m, on the two parts, one or both ribs being formed with a chamfer n to facilitate engagement.
