Abstract
236,194. Two-Tone Corporation, (Assignees of Mijer, P.). June 30, 1924, [Convention date]. Coating and clamping machines. -A process for coating textile fabrics and other materials consists in forming a cloud of atomized coating matter by the process claimed in Specification 229,351 and traversing the material relativelv to the cloud. A suitable apparatus shown applied to a dyeing process comprises a chamber a, Figs. 1 and 2, on the end walls 5 of which spraying-devices 4 of the air-brush pattern are fitted so as to form within the chamber a colour cloud. The material 1, for example, fabric, to be dyed is passed through slots 8 in the lower parts of the side walls, being supported by an endless band 10. To prevent larger drops of liquid falling on to the material, the chamber is of greater width than the latter, the spraying-devices are located at the sides of the chamber at points not above the material, and the spraying-devices at opposite ends of the chamber are positioned so as not to oppose one another directly. Further precautions to ensure regular dyeing or colouring, comprise the provision of trays 55, Fig. 2, for collecting the larger drops of liquid and placed on the floor of the chamber below the spraying- devices ; the addition of heating- pipes 170 immediately above the slots 8 through which the material enters and leaves the chamber, for the purpose of drying off any liquid that tricldes down the walls of the chamber; and the conveyer band 10 is of a width greater than that of the material and is arranged to be dried after each passage through the chamber. Doors 30, 56, with inspection @@dows in the end and side walls of the chamber enable the dyeing-operation to be viewed; and electric lamps 32 are fitted inside the chamber. Before entering the chamber, the fabric is passed over and through a pair of pressure rollers 2, 2<a>; the lower of which may be heated; and after passing through the chamber, the fabric and the conveyer band together enter a drying-chamber b in which they move across the slightly-inclined upper face of a steam chest 66 having internal baffles 67, Fig. 2. The fabric then leaves the band, and passes through a pair of rolls 3, 3<a>. The driving-mechanism comprises a motor 80, Fig. 5, driving by belt-gearing a shaft 102 connected by expanding-pulley variable gear to a shaft 104; from this shaft a belt transmits the drive to a shaft 108 connected by worm-reduction gear to a shaft 112 further geared to a shaft 116. This shaft is connected by chain gearing to the roller 12 carrying the conveyer band 10; and the shaft of this roller is provided with a series of sprockets by which the drive is taken by chain-gearing to the roller 3. the several pairs of sprockets permitting a variation of relative speed of the fabric and band. The gearing is preferably so arranged that the belt 10 travels more. slowly than the material to be dyed. The roller 2 at the feed-end of the machine may be connected by chain-gearing to the roller 11 of the band 10, the fabric being thereby fed to the machine without tension. When starting the machine it is convenient to secure a length of muslin to the band and to the leading edge of the fabric to be dyed.
