Combined buffer and draw-gear.-In automatic couplings of the kind in which the draught rigging is provided with a universal-joint motion, the draught rigging is such that the buffer shank does not extend through the spring and the head is balanced by means of a compensating spring acting .through a plunger pin. The coupling head a, which may be of the kind described in Specification 188,255, is provided with a shank b pivoted by a vertical pin e to a yoke j enclosing front and rear follower plates l, o respectively and the combined buffing and draw-spring c. The side flanges of the follower plates l, o are curved and are struck from a centre X with radii X-Y and X-Z respectively, and abut correspondingly shaped blocks g secured to the centre sills of the vehicle. In buffing, the front follower plate leaves its seating so that the coupling may pivot about the rear follower plate, and when under draught the rear follower plate o leaves its seating and the coupling pivots about the front follower plate l. The coupling is maintained horizontal by a plunger n and spring m.
