Combined buffer and draw-gear. - A central buffing and draw-gear comprises indiarubber buffing and draw-springs 12, 13 embraced by a draw-bar yoke 8, indiarubber. buffer springs 24 located in front of the vehicle headstock, a movable member 25 for compressing the springs 24 on inward movement of the coupler-head 2,- and means carried by the member 25 for centralizing the coupler-head. To provide a double spring action, the springs 12, 13 are arranged respectively between a follower head 4 and a compression plate 17 and between the end of the yoke 8 and a second compression plate 14. As shown in section in Fig. 6, the compression plates 17, 14 are provided with projecting wings 19, 18 the ends of which abut respectively against the end of the yoke 8 and the follower head 4 so that both springs are simultaneously but independently compressed upon both buffing and drawing. In buffing, a knuckle 5, connected by a pin 3 to the shank 1 of the coupler-head 2, presses the follower head 4, and, through the wings 19, the plate 17 rearwardly, thus compressing the spring 12 between the head 4 and the plate 14 and the spring 13 between the plates 17 and 15, cotters 6, 7 which pass respectively through the shank 1 and follower head 4 sliding rearwardly in slots in the yoke 8. When the apparatus is under draught the knuckle 5 draws the cotter 6 and yoke 8 forward, the cotter 6 sliding in its slots 9, while the cotter 7 is held against forward movement by contacting with the forward ends of its slots 9, holding the follower head 4 and plate 17 against forward movement and thus permitting compression of the springs 12, 13. The front buffing springs 24, of the type comprising concentric indiarubber rings moulded on a metal plate, and compressed upon inward movement of the coupler head 2 by a striking face 40 bearing on a casting 25 having annular flanges 26 surrounding the springs 24 and guided by webs 27 on the vehicle headstock, the springs being mounted on bolts carried by the casting 25. The coupler-head 2 and shank 1 are supported on a centralizing platform 30 having lugs 38 in which the shank is seated and hook-ends 31 supported on pins 32 carried by the lower ends of swinging links 33. The springs 12, 13 within the yoke 8 may be duplicated or triplicated.
