Biscuits for oral consumption by horses containing at least four and preferably at least eight different herbs evenly distributed throughout the biscuit. The biscuit is flour based, preferably sifted barley flour based and is preferably bound by molasses. The biscuits may be used for treating nervous disorders, lung weaknesses, arthritis and joint pains, hay fever and allergic pains, for promoting horn growth or as a general tonic for horses.
Description
Biscuits for Horses
This invention relates to biscuits for oral consumption, for the nutritionally and/or medicinally beneficial treatment of horses.
According to the invention, there is provided a biscuit for the aforesaid purpose, the biscuit being flour based and solidified by a binder, and containing at least four different herbs in substantially uniform distribution through the biscuit, each in the amount by weight of 3 to 25 per cent of the total herb content.
The biscuit preferably comprises at least eight different herbs, each present in the amount by weight of 3 to 25 per cent of the total herb content.
The invention is further described with reference to the following examples.
Example 1
For use as a dietary food supplement for promoting horn (hoof) growth in horses, the biscuit contains the following herbs in the following amounts (percentages), making up a total herb content of 100 g (100 per cent):
12g Huang Qi
8g Bai Zhu
lOg Gou Qi Zi
5g Shu Di Huang
5g Bo He
5g Fu Shen
5g Chai Hu
lOg Shan Yao lOg He Shou Wu 5g Gui Zhi
lOg Dang Gui 5g Gan Gau
lOg Bai Shew
Initially, 100 g of the concentrated herbs, in powder form, are thoroughly mixed and then added to 500 g sifted barley flour and again mixed to distribute the herbs evenly with the flour.
250 g cane molasses are then added and rubbed in to produce a breadcrumb-like mixture.
10 ml peppermint extract is then added to approximately 200 ml water and the flavoured water added into the breadcrumb-like mixture to produce a dough.
The dough is divided into 28 equally sized biscuits and dried or allowed to dry.
The resulting 28 biscuits represent 14 days supply for a horse, which will therefore receive 50 g herbs per week, i. e. approximately 7 g (2 biscuits) per day.
Trials have shown the herbal dietary supplement to be very effective at promoting horn growth in animals, especially horses.
Example 2
For use as a dietary food supplement for treating nervous disorders in horses, the biscuit contains the following herbs in the following amounts (percentages), making up a total herb content of 100 g (100 per cent):
12g Shu Di Huang
9g Dan Shen
9g Yuan Zhi
7g Wu Wei Zi 7g Bai Zi Ren 5g Huai Niu Xi
