Abstract

A cushion 10 suitable for outdoor use, particularly for use with garden furniture, comprises a cover 11 enclosing a filling material 12. The cover is a polymeric material and is permanently secured along its peripheral edges 13 preferably by high frequency welding or heat sealing. The polymeric material preferably comprises a material coated on one or both sides with PVC, or a woven plastic material. The cushion so formed is waterproof, can be wiped clean and the sealed edges 13 are impervious to moisture.

Description

AN PUROVED TEXTIELE ARTICLE FOR OUTDOOR USE 2336773 This invention relates
to an improved textile article for outdoor use and in particular to improved garden furniture cushions.
Conventionally, garden furniture cushions are made from a printed textile material which is filled with a padding material and sewn around the outside edges.
This prior art arrangement clearly will allow the ingress of water through the sewn seams and will also, unless treated, stain if fluid such as for example food or wine are brought into contact with them. Clearly therefore such prior art cushions will have to be stored inside during days when there is rain fall and during the winter months.
It is an object of the present invention to provide an improved textile article for outdoor use which is both waterproof and resistant to stains caused by spillage.
Thus and in accordance to the present invention therefore there is provided an improved textile article for outdoor use comprising filling material enclosed by a textile cover, said cover comprising a polymeric material, said cover being permanently secured along peripheral edges thereof to enclose said filling material.
With this arrangement an improved textile article is provided which is both permanently sealed so as to be impervious to the ingress of water and which is rendered waterproof and stain proof. This means that the article can be left outdoors at all times and can be simply wiped down prior to use.
Preferably the polymeric material comprises a plastics material such as for example polyvinylchloride (PVC) coated onto at least one of an inner or outer surface of the cover. Alternatively the cover can be formed from a woven plastics material.
Furthermore, preferably the permanent sealing operation is carried out by a welding operation using high a frequency plastic welding process. Alternatively a heat sealing operation can be used.
The invention will now be described further by way of example only with reference to the accompany drawings, the single Figure of which shows a perspective view partly in section of one embodiment of improved garden cushion according to the invention.
Referring to the Figure, there is shown, partly in section, a garden cushion 10 comprising an outer cover 11 formed from a textile material enclosing a inner filing material 12. The peripheral edges 13 of the cover are welded together using a conventional high frequency plastics welding tool or are heat sealed together.
The textile cover 11 is coated either on the exterior surface 14 thereof, or both exteriors 14 and interior surface 16 thereof, with a plastics material, for example PVC, to allow the permanent sealing operation to be carried out and to render the cushion waterproof Alternatively the textile cover 11 can be formed from a woven plastics material which is capable of being welded or heat sealed.
In use, it will be appreciated that, due to the permanently sealed peripheral edges 13 of the cushion 10 and the fact that the cover 11 is coated with a plastics material, the cushion 10 is both waterproof and stain proof This enables the cushion to be left outside during the winter months, during rainfall or at any time and can simply be wiped clean prior to use.
It is of course to be understood that the invention is not intended to be restricted to the details of the above embodiment which are described by way of example only.
