Abstract

To remove the siliceous and other impurities present in crude graphite the latter is crushed, triturated in a moist condition, sieved in the presence of water and finally subjected to a flotation process. The trituration is preferably effected by means of metal cones, sufficient water being added to form the graphite into a paste. Silica and the aluminium and iron oxides present are reduced to a finely divided condition and may be separated from the larger particles of graphite by means of a pneumatically-operated vibrating sieve provided with a metallic net. While the graphite is being sieved it is sprayed with water. After sieving, the graphite is further purified by flotation, the coarser particles being returned to the triturating apparatus. When a greater degree of purity is required, the graphite after treatment as above described is heated to about 700 DEG C. in a kiln with sodium carbonate and the product either triturated, sieved &c. as before, or is treated with dilute acid, for example hydrochloric acid, and washed with water to remove the excess acid and soluble matter, the resulting purified graphite and very finely divided silica being separated by sieving in the presence of water.
