Stretching by tension. -Leather in full hides or in sides or butts is subjected to lateral stretching by screw action, and this lateral tension is maintained unaltered while the leather is being stretched longitudinally. The hide A to be stretched is placed in a stretching frame, Fig. 1, composed of end bars a, c and side bars b, d, the bar c being adapted to slide over the bars b, d and to be clamped thereto at its ends at d in any position, while the hollow bar a has a flange m, Fig. 7, adapted to be engaged by a jaw of a stretching machine. The shoulder end of the hide is clamped by bolts 7 between the bar c and a clamping jaw 5 carried thereby, while the other end of the hide is carried between the jaws 6 of gripping devices carried and tightened by bolts 8 adjustable in slots w in the end bar a. The sides of the butt are engaged by clamping devices 9, which are tightened by bolts 10 and are carried on bolts 11 passing through brackets 12 slidable along the side bars b, d. The butt is placed in the frame and secured at its sides and ends. Lateral tension is then applied by the devices 9 through the fly-nuts 11<a> and bolts 11. The stretching frame is then taken to a stretching machine, the jaws of which engage the end bars a, c, and when the desired longitudinal stretching is attained the end bar c is clamped to the side bars b, d to maintain the leather in stretched condition until it is dry.
