Abstract
Protective headgear with a permanently integrated lighting device which improves the visibility of the wearer to others and therefore increases his/her safely, comprises a helmet with a series of flashing light emitting diodes (LED's) set into the surface of the helmet. The helmet may also be provided with a self-contained power supply or circuitry as well as a manual or automatic switching mechanism.
Description
PROTECTIVE HEADGEAR WITH A PERMANENTLY
INTEGRATED LIGHTING DEVICE.
This invention relates to the use of protective headgear with a permanently integrated lighting device for the purpose of increasing the wearers visibility to others (and therefore safety); as illustrated in Fig 1.
The safety helmet is available in a number of forms such as the motorcyclist, cyclist or jockey helmet and all provide physical protection to the user. The invention improves the visibility of the user with a permanently integrated lighting unit which is clearly visible to others.
The safety helmet has a permanently integrated lighting unit which is powered by a selfcontained power source; probably batteries although it would be possible to employ alternative methods of power generation such as Kinetic or solar energy.
The lighting would normally be activated by a two-way switch although it would be possible to automate this function by using light or movement switches or a timing device.
A specific embodiment of the invention will now be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawings in which:
Fig 1. Shows the rear view of a motorcyclists' helmet with a series of flashing light emitting
diodes (LED's) set into the surface of the helmet.
Fig 2. The LED's are activated by using the switch mounted on the side of the helmet.
Fig 3. The electrical circuitry is contained within the helmet, as is the power supply (in this
case two AA sized 1.5 Volt batteries).
The helmet manufacture would incorporate the inclusion of a lighting device and circuitry.
Coloured LED's would probably be used to provide a safe, reliable low-powered (and therefore long-lasting) lighting source which could be activated in a flashing or permanently "on" state.
The lighting would normally be mounted on the rear of the helmet in order to be clearly visible to other road-users (where used on a motorcycle helmet), and would normally form a horizontal line (see Fig. I) to improve visibility from either side of the wearer as well as from directly behind. It may be necessary to vary the formation of the lights depending on the type of application and in accordance with any restraints determined by the user.
Claims (1)
- (1) Protective headgear incorporating a permanently integrated lighting device for the purpose of increasing the wearers' visibility to others (and therefore safety).(2) A self-contained lighting unit manufactured into protective headgear (normally at the rear).(3) A head-mounted lighting device as in claims (1) & (2), to make the wearer more visible to others rather than to improve his/her own visibility.
